Can I use a written response as an evaluation mechanism? How?

Written responses can be used as evaluation mechanisms and can be responses to a variety of things.  Possible questions can be broad or narrow, depending on the context.   An example of a broad question might be, “What changes would you make as a result of what you have learned?” and an example of a narrow question might be, “What would the next step be in the care of the patient?”  The learners’ written responses can be evaluated against an ideal response.
