Should we avoid controversial topics altogether in our CE programming?

Not necessarily!  The ACCME doesn’t discourage providers from engaging in challenging discourse, but does offer some guidelines for how best to go about it, like setting up the activity as a debate or dialogue/discussion.  One tip they offer is: “Construct the activity as a debate or a dialogue.  Choose faculty who represent a range of opinions and perspectives; presentations should include a balanced, objective view of research and treatment options.” (Dealing with Controversial Topics Guide)
